A fun alternative to exploring Ho Chi Minh City on foot is to rent a motorbike. Motorbikes are everywhere in Ho Chi Minh, with many commuters using them to get to and from work. They are incredibly cheap to rent, and while not for the fainthearted, are a truly authentic, and convenient way to get around town.

By far one of the most popular attractions in the city is the Chu Chi Tunnels. A remnant and reminder of the Vietnam War, this network of underground tunnels spans an astounding 121km in total. A visit to the War Remnant Museum is also well worth a visit, and is a fascinating look at the Vietnamese side of the conflict.

A beautiful way to spend the evening is at the Conservatory of Music in Van Hoa Park. Performances take place in the park every Monday and Friday, with performers ranging from 7 to 16 years of age, with visiting groups performing regularly too.

Many tourists come to Ho Chi Minh City to shop. While there are an extensive array of designer outlets and sprawling malls, the street markets in the city are far more authentic. Ben Thanh Market is one of the largest, and you will find a selection of touristy goods as well as delicious street food, delicious local coffee, clothing and more.

You will find pagodas all over Ho Chi Minh City, but one of the oldest is the Giac Lam Pagoda just outside of Cholon. Dating back to 1744 and restored to its full glory in 1990, the blue and white porcelain work that decorates the outer walls is magnificent, while inside you will find inscriptions in Nam characters, a ancient and incredibly rare form of Vietnamese writing.

One of the biggest landmarks in Ho Chi Minh City is the former home of Ho Chi Minh himself. A Viet Kong leader, his grand colonial home overlooks the city and cannot be missed. It is now known as the Reunification Palace.

#1 Be informed! You really never know when your plans might get off track. Before you head off on vacation, learn the road rules so you can avoid road rage. New Zealand drivers drive on the left side of the road. That could take some practice for you. If you are planning to do the driving, you must yield to traffic that approaches from the ride side at unrestrained intersections. Remember, practice makes perfect. The speed limit on open roads is slower that what some of you are accustomed to, the average is 100 kilometres per hour. Also, seat belts are mandatory for front and back seat passengers. You must abide by the drinking and driving laws or deal with the punishment. Photo radar is commonly used so do not put the pedal to the medal thinking you can get away with it. Also the rental car company will debit your credit card for any fines plus an administration fee for paying the fine for you. This is not optional, someone has to pay the fine and it’s not going to be the company that hired you the car.

#2 Be insured! It’s highly likely that car hire New Zealand will have the vehicle covered when it comes to insurance rates, but if you want more, ask. You can obtain supplemental insurance to cover the vehicle in case other damages occur. This damage could be nothing more than a broken window or mirror, but it’s best to have it covered. If you are driving in New Zealand, you must get your insurance there too.

#3 May I see your license and registration? Okay, just your license. There’s no way to rent a car from car hire New Zealand without showing your license. It must be current and preferably in English or you will have to translate. If you are spending a year or more in New Zealand, get comfortable and get a New Zealand license.

#4 If you are a man, ask for directions! If you are a woman, you know this. When you rent a car, it is their job to help you. After all, they do want their car back. Car rental representatives are prepared to offer you maps and guides, plus tell you about the best sites. Keep their brochure close at hand in case you do make a wrong turn.

#5 You deserve to make the most of your time. New Zealand is unique and there is no sense in wasting the amount of time you have to be there. Think about what you can handle in the amount of time that you have. Draw up a plan, whether it’s to see one island, national parks, famous wineries, or other wonders. You may have to make a second trip another time.

#6 Don’t race down the roads. For one, you will miss some great sights, and two, the roads are unfamiliar. Do not allow yourself to be taken by surprise and stay away from possible adverse weather conditions. If you are visiting the South Island roads during the cold months, you will need to rent a car with snow chains.

#7 How about a nice, relaxing ferry ride? Sound good? Book it early because you won’t be the only traveler anxious to board. You may want to drive your rental onto the ferry or you may decide to rent one vehicle on the North Island and rent another on the South Island. Taking it on the ferry is going to cost more, but you will save time and effort on the other side.

Château de Chambery:
This fort was the home of Savoy who settled here in 1285 and later expanded it in 14th century. It then served as their residence, the seat of power and administration, and as a stronghold for the house of Savoy. It quickly became obsolete as a serious fortification genuinely capable of resisting a siege. Due to constant French hostilities the Duke Emmanuel Philibert decided to change the capital to Turin. The chateau purely remained as an administrative center until it was changed into a court. This chateau witnessed the marriage between Victor Amadeus II of Sardinia and Anne Marie d’Orléans, niece of Louis XIV. The chateau was rebuilt and redecorated under the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte. The chateau today is open to tours and concerts only.

Fontaine des Elephants:

It is the most important landmark in Chambery. Built in 1830, it was made to honor Benoît de Boigne’s feats when he was away in India. Its fountain has realistic sculptures that resembled the head and the forelimbs of four large elephants which are truncated into the base of a tall column in the shape of the Saroyan (Savoyard) cross and then topped by a statue of de Boigne. In the beginning this landmark was mocked by people but later on they accepted it as one the city’s finest trademarks.

These days things are different though. While you can certainly choose to fly on the traditional airlines – and they offer more facilities, especially if you travel business class – they tend to remain more expensive than the no-frills airlines, although not always.
