The city of Barcelona, Spain, as all the Iberian Peninsula, has been clearly marked by its long history which dates to the Roman times. But what really left a deep impression and can still be fully appreciated today is what the Arabs left behind. Not only can you awe at the lovely cathedrals, temples and other buildings but you can feel it in the powerful, brave character of the people in Catalunya. The cities of Lleida, Girona, Tarragona and Barcelona make up the region called Catalunya and with it an extensive shore line which starts at the French border and goes mid-way down the Mediterranean until the Community of Valencia.

Having so much coast, Barcelona has not only been able to captivate tourism in the summer with excellent beach resorts, hotels and water sports, but also thanks to its cultural and architectural activities. One of the most outstanding sights that everyone wants to see when traveling to Barcelona is the Sacred Family or as many people know it even though they do not speak Spanish is the famous Sagrada Familia at the Placa de la Sagrada Square. Antonio Gaudi, a renowned architect started to build a church for the needy in 1883. He, together with other architects, worked on this project which was supported by donations from those who cared. In 1898 he decided that he wanted his masterpiece to one of the most original known up until then and changed the typical bell towers which were always square to be rounded off. He also added the Swiss cheese appearance to them. By around 1923, the chapel called Saint Joseph, the east facing and the crypt had been completed. It had been worked on vigorously up until Gaudi died in 1926 and therefore buried in the crypt designed by him. Since then all the bell towers and other parts have been completed but it still has not been finished. But all around the city you can find gaudi´s works: La Pedrera, Mila House, and the park Guell. But The Sagrada Familia is still one of the most impressive pieces of architecture ever seen.

A city full of Museums and Attractions

But if you are looking for more strong emotions, then head over to the Picasso Museum. This museum is shared between five medieval palaces which contain a nice overall view of his different fazes. Therefore, it lets you travel from Malaga which was his home town to Paris, so well reflected in his paintings, to Russia and his captivating detailed ballet paintings and finally to Barcelona where he settled. This is an absolute must and even more interesting is that it costs so little, has long visiting hours to let you roam about, great public transport combinations and is found in the Cuitat Vella Parc. The Ciutat Vella ( the beautiful city ), was once the entire city of Barcelona until the end of the 14th century and was the principal and only surviving zones made up of four areas: The Gothic Neighbourhood, La Ribera, Las Ramblas ( flowered promenade ) and the Raval. It is so easy to find and get there because there are four distinctive landmarks that lead us by the hand as if it were a famous framed picture. Using the Catalunya Square as its left frontier, you go straight down Las Ramblas Street until you see the impressive Christopher Columbus Monument towering over you as soon as you reach the edge of the port. Leisurely strolling towards the north in the direction of the Olympic Port you come across the Cuitadella Park. At this point turn left to feast your eyes on the emotive Arch of Triumph some blocks away. Within this enclosed circle of narrow cobblestone streets and typically set up shops, you are wrapped up in living history.

It does not matter if you are an avid Barcelona Football ( Soccer ) fan and know that this team is usually called ´Barca´, or just a visitor who wants to enjoy a good match, do not forget to pass by the Nou Camp football stadium to reserve or buy your tickets. Football season is usually between September and May. This year Fran Rikard has led the Barca to win the Spanish Football League so there will be a lot of celebrations and neat souvenirs to buy.
The Costa Brava and Costa Dorada, as this area is referred to, has clean cared for beaches and caters to the tourist both inside the city as well as on the outskirts with a wide selection of accomodations. There chalets, semi-detached homes and apartments for rent or all kinds of hotels starting from a simple youth hostel, passing through a bed and breakfast type lodging to three, four and five star hotels. Whether you are going to be in Barcelona for a romantic honeymoon, just a quick weekend get away, family holidays or a business trip, you can enjoy yourself in one way or another.

Everyone loves a bargain, especially when it comes to that all-important summer holiday, but cheap flights aren’t always easy to find. Below is a list of tips to help you find the cheapest flights and reduce the cost of your air travel.

1.Book flights early
As soon as you have decided where you want to go on holiday, shop around to find the best deal and then book your flights. You will often find that flights are significantly cheaper the earlier you book them. Don’t make the mistake of leaving your flights to the last minute in the hope that you’ll get a bargain as invariably the prices just get higher the nearer to departure day you get. So, once you’ve worked out where you want to go and which airport you want to fly to and from, book the flights straight away. Even a delay of a couple of days can mean a price rise.

2.Fly outside of school holidays
It’s a sad fact, but parents with children seem to be penalised for taking their summer break during the school holidays. The increase in demand for flights and accommodation in a relatively short period leads to higher prices so, if you don’t have children, always try to book you holiday during school term time. Also, check the dates of the school holidays in of your chosen destination as this can affect the price of travel too.

3.Consider connecting flights
Explore various options for getting to your destination. Using connecting flights rather than a direct flight may work out cheaper.

4.Consider using a regional airport rather than a busy hub
Flying to and from a regional airport could work out cheaper than flying to the country’s main airport, but do check distances. Just because an airport’s name is prefixed with the main city’s name doesn’t necessarily mean it is close. Check before you book, as you could spend more on transportation to your actual destination than the extra cost of flying to the main hub airport.

5.Forget last-minute bargains
The key to cheaper flights and holidays is to book early, the earlier the better. Unless you have total freedom and flexibility you’re not likely to get the bargain you dream of in the destination of your choice.

6.Be flexible about your flight times
Look at the various options of flight times as this could affect the price. Early flights may have a higher demand from business travellers and therefore more expensive.

7.Travel with hand luggage only More

Often overlooked by many individuals staying in a Vienna hotel, the rail network in the city is considered extremely reliable and quick, providing not only transportation to every hotel Vienna has to offer, but also the outlying suburban areas and towns via the S-Bahn trains. In conjunction with the in-city rails there are also high-speed trains heading for Hungary and other destinations, so no matter which Vienna hotel you use during your stay, you can find a way out of the city and back to your home whenever you need it.

Perhaps the most important stretches of railway in the city, and one that every hotel Vienna has to offer for travellers will reference, are the Stammstrecke and the S45. The former runs every two to five minutes and the latter runs every five to ten minutes, giving travellers a way to get around the city without having to worry about waiting for a taxi or a tram.

Bear in mind that any trips taken outside of the borders of Vienna will require an additional ticket to be purchased, so if you plan on leaving your Vienna hotel for a day trip into the countryside pay attention to the names of the rail station. Vienna railway stations begin with the name Wien, while those outside of the city limits are considered part of Austria’s Eastern Transit Region, otherwise known as VOR. If multiple trips are planned, a Vorteilscard allows a discount on railway tickets outside of the city, but are really only practical for individuals travelling for extended durations in the outlying regions. Arriving in Barcelona: Taking a Stroll on Paseo de GraciaOn June 23 I came to the city of Barcelona to spend good holidays. Since none of my friends wanted to accompany me, I decided to make the journey alone. My flight arrived at about 4 pm, and an hour later I was wandering around the city, where the atmosphere was very special. The streets were full of children playing with firecrackers, so I ended up getting used to the sound of these explosives throughout the afternoon as I walked through Paseo de Gracia (I had an apartment for rent in Barcelona close to the Rambla and decided to go up this imposing, beautiful street). After having walked around for an hour, stopping in Casa Milà and taking pictures of the beautiful architecture, I decided to take the metro to the district of Gracia (stop off at Fontana with the green line). My brother told me that this district is known for its vibes. I realized that many people take the metro in Barcelona, or at least that day. I didn’t really understand what was happening or what was celebrated, in metro there were people with liquor bottles and they were very animated.

Discovering the Feast of San Juan Finally, after getting off at my stop, I ended up in a place where there was a buzz of people, mostly young, and decided to go to a place called Café del Sol at the square which is called Plaza del Sol. The place was very full. I ordered a large beer to start diving into the party atmosphere that floated across the city. When I was waiting to be served, I asked the guy next to me for the reason of the excitement among the locals, and he told me it was the feast of San Juan, the shortest night of the year. Two hours later I was not quite sure where I was. The guy who had I talked to, Sergio, invited me to sit with his friends, and I had to switch from beer to whiskey and tequila shots. When leaving the bar, it seemed to me that I knew these people all my life, although I’d rather not imagine what we looked like, singing the hymn of FC Barcelona. Actually, I accompanied them humming a tune that I sort of invented and flirted with every girl that passed ahead of us. We also started throwing firecrackers in the middle of the square.
San Juan at a Barcelona Resident’sAt about 10 pm the guys took me to a friend’s home who was throwing a party. Fortunately, there was a dinner, so the drunkenness diminished. We ate potato omelette and some really good sausages, and as a dessert a sort of cake, called La coca de Sant Joan. It was a cake with fresh fruit on top, very original and tasty. During dinner I was talking to a very nice girl who told me that on the Night of San Juan people celebrate the arrival of summer. Fire, water and herbs are symbols of this holiday, although currently fire, a symbol of purification, is the most used element. Beer and wine were not lacking at any time, as it is usual at parties in Barcelona.
The Big Party on the Beach We finished the night on the beach of Barceloneta, where we arrived with the yellow metro line. I was really surprised when I was told that the metro was open all night long. The number of people who were in front of the sea was incalculable, all making bonfires, throwing firecrackers, dancing and, of course, drinking. Anyway, unexpectedly I had an unforgettable night and without knowing anything about this Catalan tradition. In fact, the festival is also celebrated in the rest of Spain in very different ways. If you have the opportunity, do not miss this summer event that the locals celebrate throughout the city. The fireworks are great and the locals are really friendly!

Lombardy, the home of Milan, accounts for almost one quarter of the economy of Italy. With the huge economic success of the area, and of Milan in particular, it has become a perfect place for Milan city breaks and short breaks. I’ve been driving the Milan shuttles for a fair few years now, and thought I’d explain why we have the best of everything here in Milan; if you can afford it, Milan can offer some of the most luxurious experiences in the world. I’m going give you a rundown of the top five experiences Milan can offer so you can see what I mean…

1. Restaurant: Cracco Peck
Voted one of the world’s top 100 restaurants, Cracco Peck offers sumptuous food and drink at the table of Carlo Cracco, know to many as the last word in Italian cuisine. The restaurant was recently redesigned by top designers Gian Maria and Roberto Beretta, and is even more elegant and inviting than before. Cracco Peck is, without doubt, the best place for luxury cuisine in Milan (and arguably in all of Italy)!
2. Hotel: The Hotel Principe di Savoia
The Hotel Principe di Savoia has been a centre for foreign travellers since the early 1920’s, and has everything you could possibly want from a five star luxury experience. Having been a driver on the Milan shuttles for so long I know all the hotels well, but this has to be the cream of the crop. They have a first class spa, restaurant, meeting rooms and a pool. The rooms are also what you’d expect from five star luxury, with a variety of suites to suit your personal choice and all the usual refinements.
3. Scenery: Lake Como
While not in the city itself, you can get a train, taxi or one of several shuttles from Milan to the area. Lake Como is one of the most beautiful places on earth, and is the backdrop for some of the best spas, short break hotels and lake cruises in Italy. Crowned by the thrusting mountains, the smooth, deep blue lake water is breathtaking, and shows off natural luxury at its greatest.
4. Entertainment: La Scala
La Scala – or Teatro alla Scala to give it its full name – is one of the world’s most famous opera houses. It has played host to hundreds of famous productions and directors, including Daniel Barenboim and Toscanini. Inaugurated on 3 August 1778, the theatre has weathered World War Two bombings and rough renovations, and remains a meeting place for the wealthy and influential in Milan. Seeing an opera or recital there in the luxury boxes is magical, and the height of Milanese entertainment and culture.
5. Shopping: Via Montenapoleone
One of the most common things people on Milan airport transfers ask me is “Where’s the best shopping area?” Milan is known for its fashion boutiques and high end shops, and my answer is always the same. For luxury shopping, you have to go to the Milan fashion district, and specifically to the Via Montenapoleone. With boutiques representing Armani, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada and more, this is the epitome of stylish, luxury Milan.

The town is a popular holiday destination especially with backpackers. From November to May, the sea is populated with nasty stinging jellyfish. This means that swimming is not possible. To compensate, there is a lovely man-made lagoon on the foreshore. It holds 5 million liters of self-chlorinated fresh water.
Whether you are looking for adventure and action, or relaxation and comfort, you will certainly find it at Airlie Beach. This pictorial town is situated on a scenic peninsula that extends to the Whitsunday waters. Therefore it is a perfect base for a variety of activities in the Whitsunday waters, on the nearby islands, and on the mainland.
The Crocodile Safari is a day tour that takes you to many wild areas in the Whitsunday region. To start with, you will board a tractor drawn train into the Goorganga Wetlands. From there, a boat will take you down the Prosperpine River.
You will see crocodiles lurking in the estuaries plus lots of other wildlife. After this you can taste real ‘bush tucker’ fare. This is what Australians call the ethnic food that Aboriginals have been eating for over 50,000 years. Some of the ingredients include flowers, spices, fruits, herbs and even birds, reptiles and insects. If you’re not too keen on this, don’t worry because there’s a delicious seafood spread and a barbecue waiting for you!
The Airlie Beach area offers near-perfect diving conditions. Book a diving trip and you’ll get to see the SS Yongala wreck, then continue to the Great Barrier Reef. These trips accommodate divers at all levels of experience. Those who are inexperienced can take lessons.
For certified divers and those with lots of experience, this area provides a sensational look at aquatic life in the ocean. The water temperature is around 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, with a visibility level of 15-25 meters. Once you’re under the water, the wealth of coral formations and fish life is unbelievable.
